Pelham Architects secure planning approval
Laura Chambers Lodge redevelopment for Nottingham City Council
Pelham Architects is pleased to announce that planning permission has been granted for the redevelopment of Laura Chambers Lodge, located on Swansdowne Drive in Clifton, Nottingham.
Approved by Nottingham City Council on 6 May 2026, the scheme will transform the site of a former care home into a high-quality, 100% affordable residential development, delivering a total of 52 new homes.
The development will comprise 12 houses and 40 apartments, providing a mix of one, two and three-bedroom homes to meet a range of local housing needs. The design includes a series of two-storey houses arranged along the northern boundary, complemented by a sensitively designed apartment building to the south, creating a cohesive and well-balanced neighbourhood.
The scheme has been carefully developed to respond to its residential surroundings, with high-quality materials, landscaped spaces and private gardens for houses. Residents will also benefit from on-site parking, cycle storage and improved access arrangements.
Sustainability and environmental performance are central to the proposals. The development will follow a fabric-first approach, with high levels of insulation, and is expected to utilise low-carbon technologies such as air source heat pumps and solar panels, helping to reduce energy use and support Nottingham’s carbon reduction ambitions.
Senior Architect Mike Price said:
"We're delighted to have secured planning approval for the redevelopment of Laura Chambers Lodge. This scheme represents an important opportunity to deliver high-quality, sustainable homes that respond to local needs while creating a strong sense of place. Working in close partnership with Nottingham City Council, we’ve developed a design that makes efficient use of the site and will provide a welcoming, well-connected neighbourhood for future residents."
The project will be delivered as a fully affordable housing scheme and managed by Nottingham City Council’s Housing Services, providing much-needed homes for local residents while making efficient use of a previously developed site.
Pelham Architects worked closely with the Council throughout the design process to achieve a high-quality scheme that balances density, design and community benefit, and looks forward to the next stages of delivery.
