Accessible bungalow development in Thurmaston
New homes for Charnwood Borough Council
Pelham Architects is proud to celebrate the completion of a thoughtfully designed development of nine accessible bungalows at St Michael’s Court in Thurmaston, delivered in partnership with Charnwood Borough Council, Mercer Building Solutions and Ark Consultancy.
The scheme has transformed a dated sheltered housing complex into nine high-quality, energy-efficient bungalows, designed specifically to meet the needs of older residents. The original buildings, over 50 years old and comprising bedsits with shared facilities, no longer met modern living standards and had become difficult to let.
Work began on site in February 2025 with the demolition of the existing structures, making way for a new generation of homes that prioritise accessibility, comfort and independence.
Each bungalow has been designed with a generous circulation space and shared garden space to encourage social interaction, avoid isolation and to support residents in living independently for longer. The homes also incorporate sustainable design elements, contributing to lower running costs and long-term environmental performance.
Now complete, the development provides much-needed, modern accommodation for local people while enhancing the wider community. The scheme reflects Pelham’s commitment to delivering high-quality, inclusive housing that responds to evolving needs and creates lasting social value.
