New council homes open in Nottingham
Designed by Pelham Architects
Head Architect Mike Price was pleased to attend the official opening of Nottingham City Council’s latest council housing development in Top Valley.
The event marked the completion of the Eastglade scheme, where new residents gathered to celebrate with live music, a bouncy castle and family friendly entertainment. The event offered a chance for neighbours to meet and enjoy their new community, joined by representatives from across the local area.
Pelham Architects are proud to have designed this major new development, which delivers 106 much-needed council homes for Nottingham. Built on the site of the former Eastglade School, which closed in 2007, the scheme includes 23 one-bed flats, 63 two-bed houses and 20 three-bed homes. The development is one of the biggest council housing projects in the city in recent years and takes the number of council homes built under the Building a Better Nottingham initiative to almost 1,000.
Our design follows a fabric-first approach to maximise energy efficiency. Many properties also feature solar panels and electric vehicle charging points, supporting more sustainable living.
Architecturally, the homes draw on Nottingham’s traditional character, with a varied palette of red and buff bricks, pitched tile roofs, and detailed brickwork such as headers, arches, and sills. Carefully designed corner plots with side-facing doors and windows enhance the natural surveillance, adding both safety and visual interest to the streetscape. Front gardens, enclosed with railings provide a clear distinction between public and private spaces, while street trees and green landscaping contribute to a pleasant, neighbourly environment.
Cllr Jay Hayes, Portfolio Holder for Housing, said: “These new homes are high quality, warm, energy efficient and safe as well as being affordable. We always want to build communities where people are proud to live, and Eastglade is evidence of our ability to collaborate effectively with partners and contractors to deliver exactly that.”
This project is testament to our continuing highly successful collaboration with Nottingham City Council and it’s fantastic to see Eastglade become a place where people feel at home, and where thoughtful sustainable design helps support thriving communities.
